Cost savings from defunding the NYPD
Some of the $3 billion reduction in the NYPD operating budget will go toward replacement services, such as community responders for 911 calls, but some of it is a genuine reduction in costs. Plus, reductions in the operating budget will trigger further reductions in NYPD’s centrally allocated expenses, which cover pension and healthcare benefits. In total, at least $1 billion freed for employment, public health and other community needs is probably a conservative estimate.
